Facade Improvement Grants

The mission of the Downtown Danville Partnership is to help restore a thriving, lively commercial atmosphere to the downtown business district. The Facade Improvement Grant program provides financial assistance for downtown businesses and building owners who want to enhance the exterior appearance of their buildings.

Available Funding

  1. Facade Improvements. A 50 percent reimbursement up to $5,000 of the actual costs for the facade and/or related exterior rehabilitation expenses. Applicants must match the grant amount with funding from other sources, either public or private.
  2. Sign, Awning, & Lighting Rebate. A 50 percent reimbursement up to $2,500 of actual costs associated with the replacement of existing awnings, lighting, and/or signage or installation of new signage, awnings, or lighting.

Eligible Project Area

The eligible project area includes those buildings with street frontage within the following boundaries:

  • Washington Street (between Main and Marion)
  • Main Street (between Washington and Jefferson)
  • Jefferson Street (between Main and Marion)
  • Marion Street (between Jefferson and Washington)

2008 Grant Recipients

Five businesses were awarded a total of $23,292 for their improvement projects:

  1. Heimansohn building, 4 West Main Sttreet, exterior renovation
  2. The Locker Room, 58 West Main Street, exterior renovation
  3. Carla's Creations, 59 West Marion Street, new sign and awning
  4. The Royal Theater, 59 South Washington Street, exterior renovation
  5. Courthouse Grounds, 65 South Washington Street, exterior renovation

Eligible Activities
Items include, but are not limited to:
  • Repair to building exterior facades
  • Masonry repair
  • Cleaning of building exteriors
  • Exterior painting
  • Cornices, entrances, doors, windows, decorative detail, awnings, canopies
  • Signs, window display areas
  • Lighting or similar enhancements
  • Other repairs that may improve or restore the aesthetic and historic quality of the building

Ineligible Activities
Items include, but are not limited to:

  • Interior improvements
  • Roofing
  • Additions to existing structures
  • Sidewalks
  • Purchase of furnishings or equipment
  • Improvements completed or in progress prior to notification of approval
  • Repair or creation of features not compatible with original architecture
General Rules & Requirements

  1. Applications will be accepted on April 30th and July 31st. Notification will be made within 30 days following the application deadline.
  2. Any private building or business owner with proper authorization may apply for a facade grant if the building is located in the eligible project area.
  3. All work must comply with existing zoning regulations or have been approved for a variance by the BZA.
  4. All work must receive design approval from the Town's Design Review Committee to be eligible for a facade grant. This committee is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Town's Corridor Protection Overlay District; the entire downtown district is included in the overlay.
  5. All exterior code deficiencies or violations and imminent health and safety hazards must be corrected in conjunction with the facade renovation.
  6. Applicants shall be responsible for all construction management and contracting work as well as obtaining any necessary building permits and comply with all applicable local, state, and federal codes.
  7. Facade grant reimbursements will be made after the project has been inspected for compliance with the approved design.
  8. A business may be awarded one grant per calendar year.
